Who grants Icelandic citizenship?

The Directorate of Immigration grants Icelandic citizenship and handles the processing of applications. The Icelandic parliament Althingi can also grant citizenship by law. A foreign national who is granted Icelandic citizenship is not required to renounce previous citizenship in order to obtain Icelandic nationality.

The fee for an application for Icelandic citizenship is 27 000 ISK. Only one fee is paid, even though applications are also made for children. If you meet all the conditions laid down in the Icelandic Nationality Act, a citizenship certificate is issued to you, which you will receive by mail.

Are there any restrictions on dual citizenship in Iceland?

With effect from 1 July 2003, there are no restrictions on Icelandic citizens holding dual citizenship. Prior to that date, dual citizenship was only permitted in limited circumstances (such as where another citizenship was acquired alongside Icelandic citizenship at birth).

What happens if I don't pay my Icelandic citizenship application?

If payment is not made within 90 days of the date your application is submitted, it will be denied. Await approval from the immigration minister. The immigration minister makes a decision on any request for Icelandic citizenship.
